Sweet 16: Maryland vs. Florida Pick

Both of these teams survived absolute barn-burners in the round of 32. Florida scraped by a tough challenge in UConn, while Maryland made things close with the 12th-seeded Colorado State Rams. Each team represents the toughest challenge the other has faced so far. Here’s a look at the odds.

Maryland’s Key Players

  • C Derik Queen: Queen put on a show to will the Terrapins past Colorado State, notching 17 points, 6 rebounds, and two blocks. He’s a menace on both ends of the floor, and without another massive two-way game from him, the Terps are toast.

  • G Rodney Rice: It’s not easy to play second fiddle to Queen, but Rice did it admirably on both ends against Colorado State. He’ll need another excellent defensive performance to slow down Walter Clayton Jr.

Florida’s Key Players

  • G Walter Clayton Jr.: The aforementioned Clayton has been one of the stars of the tournament so far. He scored 23 points to pull things out of the fire against UConn, and any performance worse than that will be considered a disappointment.

  • G Alijah Martin: Martin, like Rice, was an effective second option to Clayton in the round of 32, scoring 18 points on fantastic shooting from the field. Without Martin, it’s hard to envision the Gators advancing to the Elite Eight.

Final Pick

Once again, we like the underdog here. Maryland is scrappy, deep, and led by a true star-caliber player in Queen. The Gators are too, but 6.5 points is more than enough to lay money down on the Terps.

Sweet 16: Arizona vs. Duke Pick

What a matchup this one will be. Caleb Love and the Wildcats against Cooper Flagg and the Blue Devils. There’s tons to watch for here in what promises to be one of the best games in the entire tournament. Duke is an 8.5-point favorite on the spread, and a -425 favorite on the money line.

Arizona’s Key Players

  • G Caleb Love: One of the most prolific scorers in Arizona history, Love is nothing short of incredible on both ends of the floor. His 29 points against Oregon, including numerous clutch shots in the fourth quarter, iced the game away. He’ll need that same clutch factor against the Blue Devils.

  • G KJ Lewis: Lewis’s defense is a huge reason that the Wildcats remain in the tournament. He’ll have to answer the call once more against Duke star Kon Knueppel.

Duke’s Key Players

  • F Cooper Flagg: The future first overall pick in the NBA Draft was an obvious choice here. He’s as close to unguardable as it gets, and the Wildcats don’t have an apparent answer for him. Arizona center Tobe Awaka is likely to be tortured around the perimeter by Flagg all game, leading to a huge day for the freshman.

  • G Tyrese Proctor: Proctor shot a ridiculous 90% from the field in Duke’s drubbing of Baylor. A similar performance can’t be expected, but it’s fair to think that the Blue Devils will feed the hot hand and rely on him as a second option to Flagg.

Final Pick

We swear this isn’t a bit, but we’re going to take the underdog again. Arizona has the depth and the star power to keep things close. We can’t reasonably expect a win, but we can definitely count on a cover.

Sweet 16: Arkansas vs. Texas Tech

The lone double-digit seed remaining in the tournament, Arkansas has a lot of hopes riding with them. Unfortunately, they run into the buzzsaw of the Texas Tech Red Raiders, one of the hardest, most unpleasant matchups in all of college basketball. Here are the odds below.

Arkansas’s Key Players

  • G Johnell Davis: The upset of St. John’s was a total team effort, but it’s fair to highlight Davis’s performance. He shot 50% from the field while providing insane defensive efforts, something that will be necessary to match the intensity of every Texas Tech basketball game.

  • F Trevon Brazile: Brazile paced the Razorbacks in minutes in the round of 32, largely because his defensive play and his ability to rebound. Both are key factors in this particular matchup.

Texas Tech’s Key Players

  • F JT Toppin: Toppin leads the Red Raiders in points and rebounds. He’s the clear-cut leader of the team, and he’ll be forced to make the right decisions over and over again against an Arkansas team that will double him intelligently.

  • F Darrion Williams: Someone will be the beneficiary of all of those doubles, and it’s likely to be Williams. He’s one of the best shooters and one-on-one scorers on the team, so they’ll need a big day out of him.
