💰 NFL Preseason Week 1 Review & Fantasy Tips 🏈

👀

Do the Packers have something with Jordan Love? He might be worth stashing in deeper Fantasy leagues.

He completed 7-of-10 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown, connecting with five different pass-catchers, and was 4-for-5 for 28 yards on play-action. Love’s ADP (128.1) is currently QB24 on Yahoo.

Meanwhile the dream of Trey Lance in San Francisco is quickly becoming a nightmare. He had 2 interception worthy throws (that hit the defender in the numbers).

Barring injury to Brock Purdy, Trey is not likely to see the field this regular season.

Here are some other takeaways from the preseason games over the weekend:

  • The backup quarterbacks in Miami (Mike White and Skyler Thompson) did not play well. Miami is a Tua injury away from being a mess.

  • Kenny Pickett has taken the next step. He went 6-for-7 for 70 yards and a touchdown. Something to note in the Week 1 regular season matchup with the 49ers.

  • Baker Mayfield played well for Tampa completing 8-of-9 passes for 63 yards and a 10-yard touchdown.

  • Bryce Young struggled for Carolina behind a porous O-Line.

Whoever put up this graphic is the GOAT:

Other standouts from the preseason:

  • Ty Chandler of the Vikings played well, grinding for his number 2 spot.

  • Jahmyr Gibbs played well in his NFL debut, racking up 37 yards from scrimmage.

  • The sixth-round pick for Dallas, Deuce Vaughn, looked great in his NFL debut. Knocked for his height (5-foot-5), he ended the game with 50 yards on eight carries with three receptions for 6 yards.

  • Khalil Herbert ran for a 56 yard touchdown.

  • Lions WR Jameson Williams did not play particularly well, catching two balls for 18 yards, but dropping another.

  • Jahan Dotson appears to be heating up the Washington Commanders.

  • DJ Moore is still performing well in Chicago - breaking loose for a 62 yard TD pass.

Kicker Madness:

There were some interesting storylines with kickers over the weekend.

  • Evan McPherson looks really good - hitting 4 field goals.

  • Justin Tucker is still nailing 60 yarders with ease.

  • 49ers Kicker Jake Moody (taken in the 3rd round) missed 2 FGs in the preseason opener. The 49ers say they are not concerned.

NFL Fantasy Tip

If you are picking early:

My biggest piece of advice is to remember that receiver is extremely deep. The dropoff simply isn’t as steep as it is at running back.

Last year in half-PPR leagues, the difference between the WR27 (Gabe Davis) and the WR46 (Marquise Brown) was 25 points. That’s pretty marginal, and it proves that while you may have players you prefer, it’s easier to find a comparable player a round or two later at wideout than it is at running back.

That means anchoring your early pick (if you draft high enough) with a premier running back like Christian McCaffrey, etc…

MLB Matchups

Here’s a pick for your August 16 slate of MLB games:

Detroit Tigers vs. Minnesota Twins:

We just saw this matchup less than a week ago and Detroit won 3-0 behind the best performance of Olson’s young career. The opening line in that game was

Just five days later, the Tigers opened at +150 and are available as high at +165. Why?

Even with home-field advantage, that is too much of a swing. I see value on Detroit at +165 and would play it down to +140.
