The Postseason Continues

After a great weekend of NBA playoff action, it’s time for some consequential game twos. The New York Knicks mounted an incredible comeback, highlighted by a 21-0 run, to extinguish Detroit’s hopes of stealing away Game One in Madison Square Garden. Defending their home court once again would almost certainly seal their trip to the second round of the playoffs. Somehow, the game between the Clippers and the Nuggets was even more competitive, with Denver forcing overtime after mounting a fourth quarter comeback. Each game promises to deliver more excellent, entertaining basketball.

Pistons vs. Knicks Pick

It’s easy to scoff when “playoff experience” is listed as a determining factor in a game, but Saturday’s matchup between these teams showed exactly why it matters. In the midst of New York’s onslaught, the inexperienced Pistons melted down, committing bonehead turnover after bonehead turnover in a close game, helping seal their own fate in MSG.

The key to avoiding a repeat performance is in the turnover category. The Knicks turned it over nine times compared to Detroit’s 19, a difference that certainly helped ice the game for New York. Guard Cade Cunningham must slow the game down in crucial moments and ensure his team gets a solid possession, even if the resulting shot isn’t the best look.

An improved performance from center Jalen Duren would also be hugely beneficial for Detroit. He was consistently outworked on the glass by Karl Anthony-Towns, and his defensive efforts along the perimeter opened up a lot of New York’s offense. The rest of the roster must do a better job at boxing out Josh Hart and OG Anunoby, who both crash the boards relentlessly. All of these adjustments should be made quite easily by a Pistons team that was highly competitive for three-and-a-half quarters.

While they did trail for a lot of Game 1, the Knicks have to be happy with how things went. Detroit shot 46% from three and they were still able to overcome a huge deficit and win. The Pistons’ shooting will almost certainly regress, while Jalen Brunson should get off to a much faster start than he did on Saturday.

Overall, this line should be a point or two closer than it is. The Pistons are a gritty, physical team, and they should be able to keep things fairly close even if they don’t shoot as well as they did. Take Detroit to cover at the very least.

Clippers vs. Nuggets Pick

The first game between these teams was easily the most entertaining matchup of the weekend. The Clippers followed in the footsteps of their past teams and choked a lead, eventually falling in overtime to a Nuggets team led by a Nikola Jokic double-double.

Much like the Pistons, turnovers in key moments helped sink the Clippers. They lost the turnover battle by nine, a critical loss in a game that was decided by two points. Aside from the turnovers, Los Angeles played a pretty clean game, shooting well from the field and keeping pace on the boards. When a game can be decided by any possession, even a single turnover could be the losing mistake, as demonstrated by Los Angeles on Saturday.

It’s hard to improve on the game the Nuggets played, but getting more production from Michael Porter Jr. would be a good start. Denver’s starting small forward failed to do much of anything in Game 1, contributing three points over 26 minutes of action. The Nuggets were forced to turn to Russell Westbrook for meaningful minutes, a choice that nearly had dire consequences when Westbrook took an important three-pointer deep in the fourth quarter. With all due respect to Westbrook, he’s one of the least efficient shooters in the league, and simply someone who you do not want to take that final shot. Porter must find a way to stay on the floor in Game 2 to keep Denver’s offense operating at its highest level.

The win streak is finally over for Los Angeles, but it’s still difficult to envision them going down 2-0 in this series. The Clippers should clean up the turnover issues, exploit Denver’s lacking defense, and even up the series score. Their moneyline is the play.
