The Weekender: The Best Days of Sports of the Year

It’s so close we can taste it. The Super Bowl is just over 48 hours away. All the lights, the fanfare, and every kickoff have led to this weekend. The Kansas City Chiefs will face the Philadelphia Eagles in a rematch of the 2023 title game, and that isn’t the only big event of the weekend. UFC 312, featuring two title fights in Sydney, Australia, will help Saturday night blend into Sunday afternoon as the world waits for the big game. Individual newsletters for both events will come out, while this one covers other ground.

Quick Hitters: What You Need to Know Now

🔹 Sharp Money Alert: The Philadelphia 76ers opened as 2.5-point favorites against the Detroit Pistons. That number is down a full point to 1.5. Detroit has shown to be a scrappy squad, but they’re getting a bit too much credit here. Embiid is back and in form for the Sixers, and the Pistons are on a two-game skid. Take advantage of the movement with Philadalphia.
🔹 Odds Boost to Grab: Sleeper Picks is currently offering a 100% deposit match up to $1,500, compared to a 50% deposit match from Underdog. If you need a new book, Sleeper is worth a gander.
🔹 Trap Game Warning: The Milwaukee Bucks were featured in this segment last newsletter, and here they are again, this time against the Atlanta Hawks. Milwaukee has 60% of the bets Friday night as a 5-point favorite. We recommended a fade last time, but a Hawks team left shorthanded thanks to the trade deadline should lose by double digits. Take the trap money here.

Bet Spotlight: What the Experts Are Saying
Source: Doc’s Sports
Pick: San Antonio Spurs vs. Charlotte Hornets: Spurs -12
Reasoning: The reasoning here is pretty soft. The only real claim is that the Hornets are terrible, which is true, but it doesn’t necessarily hold water.
Consensus: The public is a near 50/50 split here. The Spurs are getting 52% of the bets.
Our Take: We’re not buying what the author is selling here, but the pick is fair. Charlotte has a ton of new pieces and got worse at the deadline. San Antonio added an elite guard and was already miles ahead of the Hornets. This shouldn’t be a close game.

Best Super Bowl Player Prop Bet
This seems like a meager acknowledgement of the Super Bowl, but we promise it’s for good reason. A full newsletter surrounding the big game will be out Sunday morning with much more detail put into it. For now, we’ll settle for the best player prop pick of the day.

Travis Kelce To Record More Than 60 Yards Receiving (-114)

There are a million props to pick from on Super Bowl Sunday, but this is the best of all of them. It’s undeniable that Kelce isn’t what he once was, but 60 yards at nearly even money is too good to pass up for a number of reasons.
Towards the end of the season, this line was money for Kelce. He cracked it in two of his last three, only missing it in the AFC Championship against the Buffalo Bills. The Bills paid special attention to him, only to be torched by JuJu Smith-Schuster and Xavier Worthy. The Eagles will likely follow suit and give Kelce extra attention, but it would be a surprise if they double-teamed him nearly every snap like the Bills did.

Additionally, the Eagles have been absolutely atrocious at defending tight ends throughout the postseason. The Championship Weekend newsletter recommended betting the over on Commanders tight end Zach Ertz, who went off for eleven catches and 104 yards.
Prior to that, Los Angeles Rams tight ends put together nine catches for 63 yards and two touchdowns. This is the weak point of Philly’s defense, and the Chiefs should look to exploit it over and over again.

NBA Trade Deadline Final Update
The last couple of newsletters have been dominated by the NBA trade deadline, and we couldn’t help but give it one last spot. Covering every deal that went down in the last couple of days would take its own newsletter, so here’s a look at the most consequential trades that haven’t been featured in the newsletter yet.
The Raptors Find A Direction

Toronto didn’t seem to be a likely team to make a big move. They’re one of the worst teams in the NBA, but that didn’t stop them from picking up a piece that many contenders are surely jealous of at the deadline.
Raptors Haul:
SF Brandon Ingram
Pelicans Haul:
SG Bruce Brown
PF Kelly Olynyk
2026 first-round pick
2031 second-round pick
Warriors Gear Up for One Last Ride

Rumors surrounding Golden State and nearly every All-Star in the NBA arose at some point during the week, and the Warriors finally got their man. It cost an arm and a leg, but Jimmy Butler will join forces with Stephen Curry as a result of a four-team trade.
Warriors Haul:
SF Jimmy Butler
Heat Haul:
SF Andrew Wiggins
SF Kyle Anderson
PG Davion Mitchell
2025 first-round pick
Jazz Haul:
SG Josh Richardson
SF KJ Martin
Two second-round picks
Pistons Haul:
SF Lindy Waters III
PG Dennis Shroder
2031 second-round pick
Los Angeles Continues to Swing for the Fences

The Lakers made all of the headlines with the Luka Doncic trade on Saturday and continued their home run approach on Wednesday. Former Charlotte Hornets center Mark Williams will now man the five for Los Angeles, an addition that cost a pretty penny.
Lakers Haul:
C Mark Williams
Hornets Haul:
SG Dalton Knecht
SG Cam Reddish
2031 first-round pick

Another Friday Straight Bet
The newsletter heater continues. Our last five straight bets have all hit, so it’s time to make it six straight. Let’s get right into the odds and the pick.
Utah Jazz (+8.5) vs. Phoenix Suns (-8.5)

The Friday nightcap isn’t an excellent matchup, but there’s still money to be made. The Jazz will make the trip out to the desert to take on the floundering Phoenix Suns.
“Floundering” might not do justice to what’s happening in Phoenix. The Suns have only lost three straight, but two were to the Portland Trail Blazers, and the other was by 31 points against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Injuries are a mounting concern, as Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal are both questionable for the matchup, while starting small forward Ryan Dunn is probable. Either Durant or Beal will probably end up sitting this game out. To top it all off, the Suns are an absolutely awful team against the spread as home favorites, covering in only four of 19 matchups.
The Jazz, as one might expect from a 12-win team, have plenty of their own issues. Aside from being generally terrible, they’ll be without two of their top scorers, Collin Sexton and Jordan Clarkson. However, Lauri Markannen will play Friday.

Additionally, Utah has been pretty solid in games like this one, with a 15-11 record ATS as road underdogs, along with a 7-4 record ATS after a victory. We’re happy to back the Jazz in this one.
